How Does Neurofeedback Training Work to Support PTSD?
PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, is an anxiety condition that affects many. An individual previously diagnosed with this condition can have a range of symptoms from difficulty sleeping, nightmares, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, mood and cognitive disturbances, avoidance of emotional triggers, and difficulty concentrating, to name a few. The way these symptoms show up on a QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) or brain map is through chaotic brain wave patterns.
While many recognize that combat veterans are at high risk for the condition, traumatic experiences of many types can initiate PTSD. The traumatic event can cause stressors in the normal neural pathways in the brain. Possible resulting symptoms, such as insomnia, anxiety and depression, can be the result of these stressors and without supportive therapy, they can become self-reinforcing.
Using your innate ability to learn, we help you reduce stress in your brain that may enable brain balance. Each session lasts about 30 to 60 minutes and involves sitting in a comfortable chair and watching a video or movie that promotes a peaceful state. As your brain practices and gets more efficient, symptoms may start to recede and positive mental and emotional states may increase.
Many clients report that the first sign they notice is better, more restful sleep. As their training progresses, they feel calmer and more able to respond normally in all areas of their lives. Similar to the way you learned to drive a car, once you learn, you just get better at it with practice.
Research On Neurofeedback to Support PTSD
Research studies also show how effective neurofeedback training can be for supporting PTSD symptoms and calming your mind. A randomized, controlled study showed neurofeedback training was a highly effective approach for adults and children experiencing PTSD and this data was presented at the annual meeting of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Another research study from 2024 evaluated multiple peer-reviewed research studies that discussed the benefits of neurofeedback training.
